The Republican Cup Aba Wrestling Championship takes place every year in Gaziantep and continues to be one of the main sporting events keeping this tradition alive. Gaziantep

Come on all you heroes - Gaziantep is the land of heroes, especially on Republic Day! Why is that? Because the Republican Cup is impatiently waiting to meet its new owner and it’s your duty to join in the excitement. The traditional sport of Aba Wrestling is particularly popular in Hatay, but it also has a strong hold in another city with a vibrant relationship with the past: Gaziantep. Aba wrestlers compete to be the best every year on Republic Day when the competition is held. Weight is not important in this traditional from of wrestling. Wouldn't it be something special to watch this traditional sport, in the land where it was born and where it’s still kept alive? Of course it would! This type of wrestling is noted for its similarity to Judo and, as an aside, it is also still performed as a custom on wedding days.
